Canadian publisher cuts 500 jobs

Québecor Media, one of Canada's largest newspaper publishers, is cutting 500 jobs from its Sun chain, which operates major dailies across the country as well as hundreds of community newspapers.

The Montreal-based conglomerate is to close two facilities that, along with the job cuts, will save $45m (£28.3m) a year.

"This restructuring is regrettable but warranted by changes in our industry which force us to align our cost structure with the new reality," said its chief executive, Pierre Karl Peladeau.

The announcement came as Québecor posted a profit of $18.6m (£11.7m) on revenue of $1.06bn (£670m), down 29% on the previous year.

Its main paper is the Toronto Sun. And its other Sun titles are in Ottawa, Calgary,

Winnipeg and Edmonton. Québecor also publishes Le Journal de Montréal and Le Journal de Québec
