Dress worn by Dorothy in Wizard of Oz is up for auction

Estimate of £310,000 for outfit at Hollywood memorabilia sale which includes a James Bond suit and Marilyn Monroe's will

Dorothy's outfit from The Wizard of Oz will be the star of the Icons and Idols 2012 auction of celebrity memorabilia in Hollywood next month. The gingham dress and white puff-sleeve blouse are expected to sell for about $500,000 (about £310,000).

The outfit is thought to be the only one to be worn onscreen by Judy Garland in her role as Dorothy, the Kansas-born heroine of MGM's 1939 classic. A pair of ruby slippers from the film went under the hammer last year with an estimated price of $2-3m.

Dorothy's dress will be exhibited at Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills from 5 to 9 November, with the auction taking place on 9 and 10 November. With a starting bid of $200,000, it takes pride of place among 800 other items, including Pierce Brosnan's James Bond suit from GoldenEye, the dress worn by Angelina Jolie in the Oscar-winning Girl, Interrupted and a copy of Marilyn Monroe's will.
